What a Catch!

It’s taken a little longer to get up this last Quilt Market-related post than I thought, thanks to a little thing I like to call “My First Child’s High School Graduation.” But that’s over and all the family has left town, so life has resumed some semblance of normalcy (or as much as is possible now that school’s out) and I’m back to my blog.

I think you’ll agree it was worth the wait.

I finally got around to sewing my first softie, a cute fish from Melly & Me, only I modified it a bit to just use two fabrics instead of the patchwork called for in the pattern. I also made the decision to use no-name fabric, lest I offend anyone with my request. For an autograph. Behold:

Yes, I walked around the International Quilt Market with a fish softie, asking fabric and pattern designers and the occasional author to autograph it. Fortunately, no one I asked turned me down, which means the lucky winner of this fish will have the autographs of such cool people as:

Kaffe Fassett
Brandon Mably
Jennifer Paganelli
Heather Bailey (who drew one eye)
Laura Gunn (who drew the other)
Bari J.
Genevieve Gail
Barb & Mary of Me & My Sister
April Cornell
Ellen Lumpkin Brown
Jenean Morrison
Tula Pink (really — that’s how Jen signed it!)
Patty Young
Paula Prass
Kay Whitt
Liesl Gibson
Sandi Henderson (thank her for the zexy fish lips)
Lynne Farris
Lila Tueller
Chelsea Anderson
Joanna Figueroa
Erin McMorris
Amy Butler
Luella Doss
Jay McCarroll
Robyn Pandolph

I am so, so jealous because I don’t have one to keep. Nope. This baby is one of a kind. Just one. And she’s looking for a new home.

Quilt Market has to be one of the most inspiring and energizing places I’ve ever visited. And I love meeting so many creative people who inspire me with their work, whether it’s the fabric they’ve designed or the patterns and books they’ve written.

In order to win this fabulous, one-of-a-kind Quilt Market catch, I want you to comment and tell me about what or who inspires you. Could be a quote or a song or even one of your kids. Just tell me about it in the comments. And I’m going to let you earn five bonus entries if you Tweet about it or write a post about it on your blog and link to this post. (You can even grab the little graphic to use, if you’d like). I’ll keep the comments open until 8 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, June 1, with a winner announced on Wednesday, June 3, (unless I have so many entries that I need a little extra time).

But that’s not all! You also can win one of these limited edition “Sew Nerdy” tees! Doesn’t Myrinda make a fabulous spokesmodel? She and I each have one (hers is bright pink; mine is red). I made an extra before I left for Market, black on light pink, just so I could give it away. However, you need to be a blog fan on Facebook (giveaway details are there, BTW) in order to win it.

Two giveaways! Yours for the winning! Good luck!

  1. Aw, now isn’t she cute! What an adorable idea.
You yourself are a fabulous inspiration Mary! And that is really my biggest “crafty” inspiration…mothers that make the wonderful things they do and share with those around them, just like you ๐Ÿ™‚ It really helps me know that I can do things exciting and inspirational myself, even while wrestling the everyday Mom things.

  2. I am most inspired by the incredible craftiness of everyone else. Friends, family, other crafters/sewists, designers, strangers in magazines, catalogs (PB), EVERYONE at Quilt Market – they all inspire me to be crafty myself. I think the gene is in me from both sides of my family – my mother and then my father’s mother. Just can’t go a day without thinking of something else to add to the never ending to do list.

  3. hello, fellow sew craft blog member here. i do not really leave comments but i do read your blog regularly. you are very talented and i enjoy your blog very much!! my husband inspires me to be the best that i can be, the best mom, the best wife, the best friend. we are who we are together, and the rest is history. we just celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary last week, and still have many more years ahead of us. thanks for the chance to win this unique one of a kind softie.

  4. That fish is amazing!!!! What a brilliant idea. It is signed by all the quilting rock stars!!

OK onto who inspires me. Quilting wise, so many – the mothers who design patterns and fabric and look after their families too. Kaffe because I yearn to be as creative and free as he is. Family wise, I am inspired by any mother who is patient and kind. I need to learn patience!!

  6. Cute fish. And what a great idea. As for inspiration…it’s everywhere. I have way more inspiration than I do time to act on those inspiring thoughts. Need. More. Hours. LOL!

  7. Like so many others, I am inspired by so many people, places and things. However, I think the one person who inspires me the most is my grandma. What an amazing woman and someone who I aspire to be more like. This past Saturday she celebrated her 95th birthday and she is still as sharp as a tack. Like me, she is a seamstress and she has been tremendously helpful with sharing ideas, techniques and inspiration. We speak the same “language”. Now that I embarking on a new adventure in pattern design she couldn’t be more proud and she told me that I am living out her dream. I’m getting all teary just thinking about it. I chat with Grandma regularly on the phone about all things domestic. I tell her about my latest sewing ideas and she is always anxious for me to send her photos. She even asked my mom to create a scrapbook for her with all my designs in it. I couldn’t be more flattered. At 95 Grandma won’t be around for too many more years and I cannot even begin to imagine my life without her. Love you Grandma!!!

  8. OMG what a completely fun and original idea – you are so smart miss Mary!!! Ok so who inspires me??? That’s tough b/c there are alot of people on that list. I guess I would have to say my Mom – sappy i know, but she inspired the can-do, never-say-no attitude in me and she is amazingly talented. So there you go ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. This is such a great idea; I would love to own that little fishie!

I find inspiration in so many different places – books, magazines, blogs, everyday life! One of my biggest inspirations however is my Grandmother. She taught me how to sew when I was very young (both by hand and on a machine). She made so many things because they didn’t have a lot of money; I still have three dresses with matching shawls that she made for herself. If it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t know how to sew, and sewing brings me a lot of joy.

The other big inspiration I have is just knowing the amount of joy that something I made can bring someone. I’m currently working on a quilt as a wedding gift for my high school best friend; even though the task is daunting just thinking about how happy and surprised she will be keeps me going.

  11. I finally have a good excuse to post instead of lurk ๐Ÿ™‚ I am completely inspired by the creative and talented sewing mamas . . . mainly YOU, Dawn and Samantha to name just a few. Your skill gives me something to strive for. And of course I’m inspired by my daughter and son because they give me a reason to want to sew and create.

  12. Without a doubt all the ladies at Sewing Mamas inspire me daily. After that I get inspired by fabric I happen across and then find the perfect use for it rather than starting with a project in mind.

  13. How cute!

My children are my inspiration. My daughter loves anything twirly and my son is just a joy to sew for as long as it has some green in the outfit!

  14. Love the fish!!

So many people/places inspire me. Lately it’s been my youngest daughter, Sewing Mamas, and our recent trip to San Francisco!

    Thanks for a wonderful giveaway!

  15. Oh I need the t-shirt that says “Sew Fabric Nerdy”….
Last year I stumbled upon the fabric “Chloe’s Imagination” by Tina Givens…. The beauty of her colors and designs compelled me to purchase her fabric, which led me to others, which prompted me to buy a sewing machine (because what was I going to do with all that fabric?!), then teach myself to sew…. I have learned to sew through the incredibly talented, inspiring, and generous blogging community. Each new tutorial has offered me the opportunity to learn something new and expand my skills and provide a need for more beautiful fabrics……
Now I don’t know what I would do without my daily blog fix!

  16. What a fun idea and how awesome is it that no one said “no” – actually I am not surprised – they all seem like lovely ladies and gents.

Inspirations hmmmmm – I am often inspired by color and texture. I can usually look at a bolt of fabric and pick a bunch of different items that it would look great on and then let my sewing do the rest ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thank you for the chance!

  17. What a great keepsake! I’m inspired by nature. Especially when I venture out in the canoe for days of wilderness, I can’t help but want to recreate that feeling at home. I think thats why green is my favorite colour – makes me think of spring and life.

Thanks for hosting! What a great giveaway! Fingers crossed!

  19. What a great catch! Oh, how I’d love to win this fish!

I can’t pinpoint just one person or thing that inspires me. I get inspiration for projects from so many sources right now: blogs, magazines, stores, daily life, historical pictures, and more. Once I begin to form my own style, then I might be able to identify a few major things that inspire all of my work. Until then, I take in everything!

Thanks for the unique, fabulous, and generous giveaway!

  21. Its hard to pinpoint one specific thing…I am inspired by all the cool patterns/tutorials out there that teach you how to make neat things (that I would never think myself capable of doing but somehow the step by step instructions make it possible!), all the gorgeous, colorful, and cute fabrics available to make neat things out of, and also the look on someone’s face and the amazement they express when you give them something that was made specifically for them.

  22. Terrific idea! I can hardly wait until more photos of market start to make their way to the web. I have a large family, (9 kids) and many of them are very artistic, so quite a bit of my inspiration comes from projects that they are busy creating. They all spend alot of their spare time in my studio playing with the poly clay, knitting, embroidering or sewing. They also love to share their ‘creative’ comments with me on my work.

  23. i’m most inspired by other quilters and what they do. i’ll see a quilt while trolling blogs and think i can do that! at first i was going to say i’m inspired by fabric but when i really love a fabric, it takes me forever to find a project for it and actually CUT it!

  24. My inspiriation lies in the eyes of my children. They are my muses and have the potential to be really great people when they grow up, not to mention crafty little kittens!

  25. Right now I am totally inspired by being out and away from everything…inspired by nature and shadows, lights and leaves…and anything in between.
