I’ve been missing sewing from my Ottobre Design magazines. When the latest issue arrived, I was bound and determined to sew at least one item from it and the Three-Way Dress seemed like a great place to start.
It’s essentially a sleeveless peasant dress or pillowcase dress but it’s Ottobre and thus cooler. LOL! It was a really quick project and I had fun picking out the fabrics.
Really my only complaint about the dress is the neck tie. It’s supposed to gather the front and back panels but it doesn’t actually keep them gathered and that just bugs me. Plus the ribbon is a bit too long and I’m concerned about it being a choking hazard. I’m thinking about doing a combo elastic-and-ribbon thing with some anchoring stitches to resolve both issues.
Miss L, of course, thinks it’s the most beautiful thing she’s ever seen. There was a small amount of bribery involved in getting this photo, hence the very obvious case of bedhead.
Overall, I think it’s a great summer dress and will be a wardrobe staple all through these hot, steamy days.

That was always my problem with the pillowcase dresses too! I just use elastic. The gathers stay distributed evenly that way and it looks so much better. I even have a bad tutorial on it. LOL! It was my first tutorial

What a beautiful dress you made. I love the fabric you’ve chosen. The dress is on my to-do-list also. Along with thousands of other things, I must admit. But I think now that I’ve seen yours I’m putting it on top of the list.
By the way, your little model is very cute. Even with, or mabye even especially with, the bedhead. I love those curls!

Awwww, I LOVE the bedhead, it’s so sweet! I agree with Renee, I wish mine looked that good in the morning
Great dress & love the fabrics you picked! I love Ottobre, but sometimes I find that the instructions are translated into words that I understand in order to follow the instructions. Maybe it’s just me, lol.

Bedhead? I seriously wish my bedhead looked so great!
Such a pretty dress. I have that one traced for Kyra. Nice to know about the gathering not saying, I dislike that too.

I adore this dress. I’ve made many like it and think that adding the elastic will do the trick. Aprons and skirts are the other things that I love to make from pillow cases. Great job from both of you!

Love, love, love!! That peacock fabric is gorgeous! I think elastic in the neck area is a great idea. Then you can have the pretty ribbon permanently affixed. I agree with L, that is so pretty!

stumbled across your blog… cute dress and i like the fabric combination – so vibrant and fun!
quick comment about the drawstring… easiest way to fix that is to pin it where you want it, and stitch the ribbon in along the edges of the neckline. it won’t come out in the wash, either… fray check the edges and you’ll never need to replace the ribbon. that’s what I do with all of mine and its so much easier than worrying and fidgeting with the gathers.
