Days Two-Four of this week’s pattern-testing binge is all about the new Mod Kid Sewing Patterns by Patty Young. Of course, I’ve only sewn two out of three things and have been laid up today with the rotten cold Miss L shared with me, so Day Four may be Friday. Or Saturday.
Anyway …
I broke my personal fabric-buying rules when I picked up the Sprites of Tillbrook: I had no idea what I was going to make with it, but I bought it anyway. When I started looking through my stash for fabrics to use when pattern testing Frida, I just knew the Tillbrook would be awesome. And I think I was right!
Do you know how it is when you get an idea for something and then make it, and it’s even better than you’d imagined? Well, that’s kind of how I feel about this dress. I am so happy with how it turned out! I’m working on the headscarf (it’s about half done) but I used the same floral fabric from the bodice for it and I think I’m using the mushrooms for the ties.
I like how easily the pattern comes together and I’m happy with the fit. I sized up a tad bit so Liesl could wear this all summer. I think I might make the next dress a little longer, just because she’s so tall in proportion to her girth.
I’m already plotting what fabrics to use for the next one of these I sew. I think I’m going to do the tunic with a pair of shorts. And definitely more pockets — the little miss loves her some pockets and these are a nice size for holding all of her treasures.

Loving this dress! It is so cute and your fabric choices make it sing. I went looking on Patty’s site to see about getting the pattern (which I hope you get something for the publicity you’re giving with your awesome sewing). So did you shir the sleeves? The ones on the pattern front look more wing-like. I like how yours are more tailored to the arm. Is this an option in the pattern or did you just make this adjustment? If so, is it shirring or a casing? Inquiring minds want to know. Also, how did you find the sizes…true to what your daughter regularly wears? I have a tall but very skinny 7 year old I’m hoping to fit and wondering if the 6/7 will be big enough with some lengthening. Thanks for the inspiration and letting me pick your brain. Yeah for spring dresses!

That is an absolutely darling dress. After she outgrows it, put it away for your grandchildren. It is perfect in color and design. I love it!

Mary, thanks so much for the glowing review of the pattern. You are so awesome and the Frida dress turned out amazing!
In response to Nichole’s questions above, yes, the pattern comes with 2 different sleeve options: you can do a “flared” sleeve as shown in the pattern cover, or a “capped” sleeve as Mary opted. The back of the pattern has pictures & diagrams of all options. There is also a tunic length and 2 different dress lengths included in the pattern instructions.

Hi there,
I have recently joined the world of sewing and am absolutely loving it. My sister found a blog site and i have gone through many and picked my favourites, yours being amongst them.
I just love this outfit, it is so girly and pretty. I love the way your blog looks too. I am trying to get my blog looking great, but i just don’t know where you get all this cool stuff from, the logos and patterns and colours.
I have decided to venture into vintage clothing and have bought a stack of patterns from Glorious Vintage. I will be making them and then selling them on Etsy.

Hi! I am trying to decide which size to make in this Frida pattern for my 5 year old. Did you think it runs true to size? I’m not sure whether to size up to the 6/7 or stay with the 4/5. She is wearing sizes 5 and 6 in other clothes.
