Right now I’m supposed to be thinking of the classes I want to teach at Intown Quilters in the next few months. Instead, I’m thinking about how weird it is that I teach at a quilt shop but I don’t quilt.
It’s interesting, actually, because Taffy and I had a discussion about the subject when we were at Quilt Market with Sarah last month. Her take was that by doing my type of sewing, I add something different to the mix, and that’s A-OK. Still, it was hard not to walk around the convention center in the midst of all these amazing quilts and not wonder if I’ve been missing out on something.
Since I’ve been back, I’ve found myself leafing through quilt patterns in additon to clothing and bag patterns when I’m in the shop. I browse the bolts and fat quarter bins, trying to picture in my head how this one or that one would look as a messenger bag or a dress or … well, a quilt. And it’s highly possible that in a very short amount of time, I’ve gone from owning no quilt patterns to having five in my collection.
It won’t be long before I give in to the urge, especially since I just committed to makea block for a friend’s quilt. Hope she realizes I’m not a quilter.

DO IT MARY! You will love it and you will be hooked! It is easy-peasy compared to garment sewing as it is all straight lines. With your natural knack for putting great fabric combinations together, you’ll come up with fantastic quilts! I think quilting was on your 2008 new craft list anyway…what a great way to end the year.

Mary, I swear you just said exactly what I’ve been thinking since coming back from Quilt Market! I never once had the urge to quilt, but now, I find myself reading quilting blogs and looking at “quilty” things LOL! I’m thinking of taking a class.

Mary, I used to be an avid quilter until I had kids and was introduced into the world of boutique kids clothes. Since then I haven’t done any quilting to speak of. A few small ones here and there, mostly decorative ones. It’s very different from garment sewing but so satisfying in a very different way. Kids out grow the clothes we make but a quilt can be an heirloom passed down from generation to generation. I think you should give it a try!!! Just think of the amazing quilt you could make for Liesl’s room!

I made my first (and so far only) quilt when I was pregnant with my son. It took me forever, as in I didn’t actually finish it until he was almost one. Now I have the supplies for my daughter’s quilt, but I’m not sure when that will happen.
Anyway, it is a very rewarding sewing experience. I highly recommend it!

I can’t get enthused about quilting. I’ve cut things out, put the random bit together, and then it lies there in pieces for the next however many years or so. But I LOVE to look at them; they are AMAZING works of art!

I am with everyone else, you MUST quilt! It is so easy, it is so fun! You can so do it!
I think you will find it somewhat freeing because it is so different from sewing garments. Try it, you will like it!
