A Secret
I get a kick out of working on customs, especially items I know will be one of a kind. The collaboration, the construction — it’s just really a rewarding method of working for me, maybe because so much of what I do is a solo effort.
B. and I exchanged quite a few emails about this jacket, trying to find just the right fabric for it. And I think we hit a home run! I’ve done my fair share of sewing with Sandi Henderson’s Farmer’s Market fabrics, and it’s quite a treat to use it for my current favorite wardrobe piece.
B. asked if I could do a little something fun with the sleeves and add a contrasting lining. I wasn’t quite sure I could pull it off, to be totally honest. It’s just one of those little details that I wanted to be perfect and if I can’t make that happen, I’d rather not do it. I really thought it out, though, and played around with the construction process in my head. When it came time to execute, it went off perfectly. I love the little touch of color inside the sleeves. It’s like a small secret, because you can’t see the lining unless the sleeves are held just so.
I was a little sad to see the jacket go off to its new home, but I know it will be well loved and well used.
