Clueless in the City

25September

Miss L and I were browsing in Target today and I decided to check out what was on sale in the DVD area. You just never know when some classic ’80s movie is going to be marked down to $7.50 and I’m all about a good deal.

I noticed as I walked past the new releases that whatever came out on Tuesday was gone. I mean, sold out, cleaned out, the entire rack empty. Curious about what hot movie I’d missed, I moved closer to read the shelf tag.

The Sex and the City Movie.

I don’t think I could have been more surprised if one of Rob Zombie’s movies had flown out the door with actual wings. Seriously — Target sold out of SATC:TM in two days (or less)? It boggles my mind.

Actually, the fact that the show even became a movie escapes my understanding. You know why? Because I can’t stand the show. I’ve watched a handful of episodes and never got the appeal. One of my best friends loves the show beyond all reason and I initially tuned in based on her recommendation. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings, so I told her I loved it, too. In my head, I was thinking, “liar, liar, pants on fire!”

I don’t know what show she was watching but the one I saw was nothing worth tuning into again. I could not relate to any of the main characters. In fact, I really didn’t even like any of them. And I darn sure wasn’t going to pay $9.50 (before snacks) to sit through two hours in a dark theater with that crowd.

After today’s shopping excursion, I’m convinced that I’m the only woman in the country who feels this way. Which means I’ll just have to knock over some geeks on my way to grab Iron Man next week.

LOL – I have not seen Sex in the City – ever. No desire to. But – I did see Iron Man and I adore Robert Downey, Jr.

I am SOOOO glad to find someone else who didn’t get it! My xsil just went gaga over that show and I never did understand what was so special. I was that way with Friends too. Gimme the Naked Archaeologist or Survivorman any time.

well I do enjoy the ridiculousness of fashion portrayed on that show, but I prefer a good crime drama myself ;)

  4. The delightful Laura replies:

You’re definitely NOT the only woman who feels that way. I couldn’t even sit through one entire episode!

  5. The delightful sadira replies:

Love S&C myself…and I think it’s just fine to have different likes…makes for more wonderful conversation!!

I didn’t see the movie, but I watched most of the episodes on HBO. It was an ok show. I didn’t relate to any of the characters, either, so it didn’t appeal to me very much. I loved the Sopranos, though, and would pay to see it in a theater any day!

  7. The delightful Sandra :) replies:

Nope, you’re not alone … I’ve never been interested enough to even watch a single episode. Give me a good sci fi (Fringe, anyone?! Loving it!) or crime drama (Criminal Minds!) and I’m happy :) I’ll be grabbing Iron Man and Indiana when they come out … and I can’t wait for Quantum of Solace :D

  8. The delightful Amanda replies:

Never watched a second of it. Never cared to.
    You are not alone sister.

  9. The delightful Becky replies:

Definitely not alone. I never had any desire to watch that show– the whole genre of catty women hopping from boyfriend to boyfriend never appealed to me anyway. (Don’t watch Desperate Housewives, Lipstick Jungle or any other shows like that for the same reason.) I’d much rather watch sci-fi anyway– most of my must-watch shows are on that channel, and most of the rest of them have definite leanings towards that (Heroes, Chuck, Lost….)

Blah…I skipped past the show a few times, and was always put off enough to just keep going. I guess the clothes were great, but even THEY weren’t enough to stomach the rest!!

  13. The delightful Becky replies:

Nope. Never got it. Thought they were pathetic. Thought the ‘fantastic’ clothes tacky beyond belief. So glad to hear there are other women like me out there! All my friends love it and wonder why I don’t.

Too worldly and over the top for me. You’re definitely not alone in your views. I’m right there with you.

You are not the only one. I never got Sex in the City, either. I’m not a big television person so I always thought that might be the reason.

  16. The delightful Lilia replies:

I was a regular Sex watcher. Loved it! Was sad when the show ended, but wasn’t really into seeing the movie. I rented it at Blockbuster but haven’t gotten to it yet. As for relating, well, I guess I couldn’t really and that’s what made it exciting for me. Hated the clothes and really? Women walk in NYC in 5 inch heels? Unimaginable. But still loved it.

BUT, I am also looking forward to Iron Man and THAT one will be purchased.

Another one that just doesn’t get it and can’t watch it. The people I worked with thought I was the crazy one. Do you know that almost 100% of the lunch conversation in our office (a law office no less) centered around tv, movies or being catty about someone?? That seems to be the crowd that like sitc the most. Hmm.

    Add me to the list!

I was just saying to my husband last night that I may have to turn in my “chick card” because I never watched SAC or Grey’s Anatomy.

Give me Supernatural or Deadliest Catch!

  19. The delightful Tiffany replies:

I just love the things you make, and I agree with you I really don’t like Sex in the City as well! I really enjoy reading your blog, and I wanted to let you know that you are one of my crafty blogs this week!

You’re not the only woman–there are at least two of us. M grew up in the same city with one of the writers on SITC and went to an event here in our new locale where she spoke and was selling her book–and even having read the book and caught some minutes of the show–I just don’t get it–it seems depressing to me–
    Blessings!

  21. The delightful Andrea M. replies:

Obviously there are lots of us! Never could see the appeal of SITC, or any other shows like it. Perhaps I’m just too “middle America” (read “happily married with 2 kids and 2 dogs!). Nobody on the PTA dresses or acts like those SITC ladies. Give me Dancing with the Stars, Samantha Who, and Medium any day! Throw in one or two of my kids’ basketball games, and I am entertained for the week!

  22. The delightful jessi replies:

I’ve only watched bits and pieces of it, but add me to your list – I don’t really get it!

  24. The delightful Devilish Southern Belle replies:

I knew I loved you! You’re certainly not the only woman who feels that way. I never could stand that vapid show, either. I began to think there might be something wrong with me when I started blogging and saw how many bloggers LOVED it. And yeah, I am surprised that it sold out that quickly, too.

I saw half of an episode of SITC, no interest in seeing another. Definately no interest in see a 2 hour episode of it. You are not alone.

  27. The delightful Mathmom replies:

I bet this isn’t shocking, but I’m not a fan of that genre either. I never made it through a whole episode. Psych is my true love!

  28. The delightful Heather~Domestic Extraordinaire replies:

I would watch, but I didn’t enjoy much. Friends were always watching. Not rushing out to buy the DVD or even watch it for that matter.

  29. The delightful AmandaS replies:

I was never into SATC either. And I tried. I really tried. But since I’ve never: A) been into high fashion and didn’t know what Manolo was for along time and B) slept around with anything – the show never appealed to me. New to your site.. I’ll be back :)

Ummm…I guess I am with you on that one. I have never seen an episode. I’d rather watch ghosthunters.

  31. The delightful Angela replies:

I watched one episode. It was so stupid. Watching a bunch of beautiful thin women in beautiful expensive clothes have sex with tons of strange men and sit around and talk about it, doesn’t appeal to me at all.
