I finished up the last of the painting on my current project today, the neat custom clothes stand for Miss L’s room. I had spied something similar when Honey and I were in Chicago last year but was reluctant to spend that much money on something so simple, that also didn’t really match her room.

This one didn’t take much; just some ready-made wood pieces, screws and some paint. Oh, and tools (saw, drill, screwdriver). It would have been much faster had I actually taken the time to measure things and buy the right screws the first time. But where’s the fun in that? The long piece of wood and the hardware I bought at The Home Depot. The rest came from the craft store in with all the unpainted wood. The base of the stand is actually two ready-made circular wood plaques!

All told, I think it cost about $15 to make this, excluding the paint. And I think it’s only fair to exclude the paint, since I bought that for painting her bed and dresser last year.

I had to share two pictures of it. Originally, I was just going to use the one with everything on it, but then I realized you couldn’t actually see the rack. Duh. Aren’t the necklaces cool? My stepmother sent them home with us from Florida. She used to wear them with her power suits back in the ’80s. The dress-up clothes are a mix of things I’ve bought (Halloween clearance at Target!), she’s received as gifts (leotards) and stuff I’ve made (kimono, cloak). The shiny red is actually the lining of a Zorro cape my mother made for G years and years ago. (We were living in Jacksonville at the time, so he was maybe 3-5 years old. He’s now 15.) He may have outgrown it but his sister can continue to love it for years to come.

I still have some other things planned for her little dress-up corner, and maybe I’ll actually get them done this summer.  Ha ha! Yeah, right. The first thing I may deal with is the super yard-sale bargain I picked up: a Little Tikes vanity. $2! I’m thinking it needs a paint job, maybe hot pink (if Krylon’s plastic spray paint comes in that color). I’ve already picked up a cute green stool for it at Ikea; it just slides right under, like it was made for it.

So cute! I may have to “steal” your idea for a larger version for Chicken’s room. I think we are finally going to be able to paint her room because she is finally keeping it clean. We have all the stuff, just waiting on her to stop letting the tornado run rampant thru there.

I have seen the Krylon hot pink up here at my Wally World, so if they dont’ have it by you, just give me a shout out. (altho I am not sure I can send that thru the mail…hmmmm)

Wow, Mary, this is so awesome! Yes, I might have to steal this idea as well and see what I can come up with. Might have to do a larger size as well. Gorgeous colors ;)

I have the same pink little tykes stroller and high chair. Didn’t know there was a vanity. I’ll have to keep my eyes open. My plan was to do the Krylon in blue and then paint a Scandinavian pattern on them. Ha ha. Let’s just say they’re still pink.

    awesome job, Miss Mary!

Love the idea of painting the vanity hot pink! you could also add a huge tulle skirt around it. Then put a zillion hot-fix swarvoski crystals all over the tulle. I know, brilliant I am…LOL!

    With friendship,
